Our yard in the Plantation is a mess. We live up in New York and are trying to find a good company that can mow it, make sure the sprinklers are working properly, trim, fertilize and are honest and dependable. Any suggestions.

I don't know if you'll find ONE company that does it all, but I could be wrong.

We use Top Rate to mow, and Empire for fertilization. That said, our lawn's a mess, too. This past winter was very harsh, and most folks lawns look like heck. There has been a LOT of re-sodding going on.

I suggest you ask your closest neighbors who they use. You may get a better rate. if nothing else, there'll be consistency in lawn care.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful,
Ellen

Assuming you have St. Augustine, no matter how bad your lawn looks it can be cleared up in just a matter of a week or two by simply fertilizing and watering it properly.

There's not much of a trick to it -- just make sure the fertilizer is strong enough (don't bother with "timed release" because the soil is so porous here that it won't retain anything) and make sure you water it every day for a week or two (which is allowed for "fixing" lawns even under the conservation guidelines). Because it's a weed (essentially) it will grow like crazy when it's warm enough (as it is now).

We first found this out when a section of our sprinklers were cut (by Pringle) and not fixed for six months. I thought that huge section of lawn (that hadn't gotten watered for the whole time) was completely dead (and needed resodding) but nothing could be further from the truth. The landscape guys just told me to fertilize and water every day and sure enough, in less than 10 days it was perfect again. St. Augustine is almost impossible to kill.

Our home is in The Plantation.
We use Carrol's mowing. They mow our place every Tuesday or Wednesday. They mow, trim, edge and blow the clippings. I am VERY pleased with them.
It is a small family operation, with the family and a few employees. They always have about four people working on your yard at the same time, so they get done very quickly. He sends my bill up to my NY home. I do not often give recommendations, but the Carrols have been a real blessing to us, living 1300 miles away.

they are insured, etc, and their rates are VERY good. I LOVE mowing my 3 acres up in NY, and will miss mowing when I move to Florida, but honestly, I could not do it for as little as they charge.
Their number is 352-267-1781.

The owner is named Billy Carrol. He is very respectful, always saying, Yes sir, etc, etc. Real nice, hard working person. Feel free to tell Billy Frank D'Angelo from Greentree said hello.

They do not fertilize. Usually mowers do not, as it takes special licenses to do so. you have many options for that...Massey, etc. Massey will do fertilization, and maintain sprinklers, etc.

Thanks for the information. I am keeping my fingers crossed that watering and fertilizing will work. Two people have told us that half our lawn needs to be resodded which I'm hoping we won't have to do.

Mike,

I always use Scotts. I usually use just their "standard" St. Augustine fertilizer (it's the one you can use year around). My neighbor's philosophy (which I tend to agree with) is that if your lawn is adequately fertilized (and because the soil is so porous here, that means at LEAST four or five times a year, and more is better) the weed that it is will choke out the other weeds.

However, at least once a year I use their Weed and Feed, usually in the early spring, just on the theory that it doesn't hurt to try and kill off the crap that's grown over the winter. But I don't wait long before following that up with the pure stuff (although to be fair this year I've been lax -- I really need to hit it again with the main stuff assuming I can find a window when it isn't rainy in the late evening <g>).
