I think there is some kind of zero layer function somewhere -- I wrote one myself, but it was only so-so (it's part of my autorig script so never published anywhere). I had it specifically because I had screwed up some characters and insofar as my own workflow goes it did work properly. I just don't think it is robust enough to give to everyone.

But I do think I remember coming across one that Smith-Micro had -- perhaps in the utilities file, perhaps in one of the tools. Offhand I don't remember for sure. But it might be worth searching for.

this is in beta but it might do what you want...

This is a first version (version 5.411 ) of a frame-baking script

>> update:
the above link seems to be broken, and I can't get mediafire to take a new version of the plain .lua !?. here's a replacement link to a zipped version

It will create a copy of the selected layer - which can be a group or group within group or just a vector layer and it will convert all layer / bone etc motion into point motion, and set all the layer translations, rotations etc to 0 (and scale to 1).

It will also bake all the animatable layer and shape etc options

The idea is that this provides a "hand-off" method for going from bone motion to fbf and vice versa..

you can bake the points for use in the current document with the camera settings on the frame at which you choose to bake
you can bake for export to a new document with default camera settings
(then up to you to copy/paste layer and delete the source)

If it finds a layer type it can't handle (e.g. audio, image) it will report.

Tested only on AS11.1 (Windows)

Limitations / known issues:

- it does not yet handle animated shape order

- it does not yet handle patch layers or image layers

- it really can't cope with particle layers at all

- it leaves bones where they were (I thought about deleting them or trying to line them up with the transformed points, but ...)
- it's a bit "untidy" at present if you have animated scatter brush items (because of the negative keyframes that they use??)
- it doesn't handle stroke width changes that result from scale compensation
- it won't deal with motion blur or physics
- not tested with immune to camera layers

it's a menu script (or a button - but I haven't done an icon for it yet) so you can put the .lua in <custom path>/menu/scripts/draw.

At this point, the thing to do is just take my lumps and know better than to do things this way again. There's no need to have this issue again and after this time, I won't!

One must attempt the absurd to achieve the impossible.
