Yeah, Unity is the way to go for standalone games and for those dedicated to spend the time to master it.

For those who either don't have the time or the inclination to work that hard (or just want an introduction) I'd recommend Project Spark (free with the same sorts of limitations in that you have to pay for better and/or more content).

I view it as another way to market animations.
A wide array of platforms are available to market the games.

Hmmm, that's an interesting approach. So you are selling assets for use in Unity?

One of the things I really dislike about Spark is the inability to use your own stuff (although you can use still images through a hack). But I'm definitely not going to live long enough to ever use Unity <bg>.
